Rajen Toor is the creator of the ethereal wines produced under his label, Ursa Major. He grew up amongst the vines of his family’s winery, Desert Hills, where he is part of the winemaking team.

The name Ursa Major (Latin: “Greater Bear”) is named for the constellation, and the mother black bear with her cubs who would feed on the ripe grapes before harvest each year. This would become a spirited game to see if the grapes could be picked before these wild visitors arrived.

Rajen’s philosophy on farming focuses on regeneration. This involves creating a self-sustaining eco-system that can replenish itself for future generations. Soil health and cover-crops are important in this farming method, as is converting vineyard practises to organic.

Ursa Major’s experimental wines challenge the status quo of the typical Okanagan style we often see repeated in the Valley. They represent Rajen’s learning, patience experience and challenges.

This white wine is 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Muscat from the sustainably farmed Mirror Lake Vineyard on the Golden Mile Bench in the Okanagan Valley. Ursa Major wines adhere to low intervention winemaking. This allows for each wine to express its terroir and independent vintage characteristics.

The striking aromatic profile of this wine explodes with a tropical fruit profile of mango, passionfruit, pineapple and freshly cut grass. It expresses the florality of a garden blooming with jasmine, orange blossom, and lilac. On the palate are more savoury notes of orange peel, chamomile and lemon pith. This wine will accompany a variety of fresh summer salads or a light creamy pasta. Et in Oliver will also drink beautifully on its own and show you what the future of Okanagan wine can be.
